Yesterday we had two sold out tours of 25 architecture enthusiasts through the Schweiss Home and Bernoudy's own private residence- both off of Litzsinger in Ladue. The day was crisp and sunny. Everyone seemed thrilled with the experience.
I need to note that the Schweiss Home was likely designed by Edouard Mutrux who was partnered with William Bernoudy. Edouard Mutrux preferred an exposed wood ceiling, where Bernoudy's ceilings were usually plastered.
Please notes that this tour is in an effort to save the Schweiss Home. We need to find a buyer before the property is sold to someone who just wants the lot.
My mother owns the Bernoudy home that we toured which she bought from the William and Gertrude Bernoudy estate after Gertrude passed away. Her fearless friend, Lucy, a Westie, helped guide people through her home.
Below is a picture of a sculpture outside of the Schweiss Home. It is a plaster-caste version. I am assuming it is by Ruth Schweiss, though it looks a lot like one of the sculptures of Carl Milles who did the Meetings of the Waters down near Union Station.

Here are some exterior pics of this lovely Bernoudy-designed home on 1.26 prime Ladue acres.
"Stunning Bernoudy designed home in prime Ladue location! Modern architectural design is in harmony with sophisticated surrounding landscape. Private terraces and an oversized spa enhance the beauty of the outdoor spaces. The living space is dramatic as the dining room flows down to the living room with walls of glass in both rooms creating wonderful natural lighting. Materials from the exterior such as glass, brick and wood are carried to the interior to accentuate the overall design of this smashing home. Hardwood floors, coffered ceilings that jump to 12 feet, designer lighting, three brick fireplaces, built in cabinetry, generous 6 foot hallways, and gourmet kitchen, all contribute to making this great environment. The master bath has a heated marble floor and steam shower. A smashing black granite wet bar and powder room are adjacent to the family room."

Yesterday I visited a lovely Bernoudy home in Ladue that was sold last year. The new owners have done a wonderful job of restoring and decorating the home. The owner noted that the home has proved to be a perfect family home. With the easy access and relationship to the outside, his children relish going outside. He says that his family now congregates in the open family room rather in their private spaces. Good architecture works to create a true home!

"One might ask can ART exist in home design or only on canvas, in sculpture or music? The answer is a definitive yes, if it was designed by famed architect, William Adair Bernoudy, a disciple and apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright. This is a breathtaking, expansive mansion, in the very heart of Ladue and a rare matchless opportunity, some would say "once in a lifetime" find, for the astute buyer to acquire not only a large, secluded lot but also a legend's incredibly built masterpiece home. Art comes in many forms, and this resort-quality home with it's indoor pool, spa and sauna is your matchless opportunity to own a "piece" at an unheard of acquisition price. This expansive manse and lot are believed to be among the largest that Bernoudy ever built. Add your name to it's ownership registry during this first offering of true genius blended with the elements that makes a home an internationally recognized architectural masterpiece. This home won't linger in any market. SOLD AS IS."
$999,900 This home was on the market a couple years ago for over $1.5 million. On almost 2 acres in Ladue!

My blog does have readers! I have been getting a nice response from Bernoudy/ architecture/ MCM enthusiast who want to make sure that this treasure is not lost. Everyone is just in love with the small home. There is real danger of the property being purchased just for the valuable Ladue lot. See my previous post HERE. There are some serious parties, though there is no resting until "they put their money where their mouth is!"

The lovely Schweiss Home designed by William A Bernoudy is available to purchase. This is a rare opportunity to buy a gem of a home located on a quiet Ladue lane- Daniel Rd. The lot is large and private....which is a problem....the lot is too valuable. This house is in real danger of being torn down by someone who just wants the lot. The price is somewhere around $410,000 which is also a good price point to buy a lot in Ladue. Someone needs to step up and buy this treasure before it is lost. The current owners would hate to have the house torn down, though economics become a reality. This home is small and would be ideal for a single person or close couple. It would also be a great St. Louis pad for a person or couple who travels a lot. The concrete flooring has a diamond motif that you can find at the Frank Lloyd Wright house at Ebsworth Park in Kirkwood. New HVAC, electric, plumbing....and more, though still needs some finishing work.
Find out more about the Schweiss and see more pics HERE

The story of working with and adding to a William Bernoudy-designed house becomes a lesson of “complexity and contradiction in architecture” on a very local and personal level. Builder and designer Richard Reilly will share the story of renovating and updating the 1953 Simms House (located at #3 Sumac Lane in Ladue) with his drawings and photos of the project.

Located up in the rolling hills of Pike County, Missouri is a fabulous Bernoudy that was built by a St. Louis family as a country retreat. It is now a private hunt club called Malinmor. I have not been through the house in a while, though I remember it as large with amazing views. Today I can just show you the front gates and long drive.

There is a cool Bernoudy in Ladue that is slowly being renovated. I think the current owners have gutted it substantially. I hope they have left some of the original built-ins and features that are so wonderful in the Bernoudy homes. Look at the aerial photo below. The house has two round rooms....very LA!

September 16, 2010 | Thursday, 5:30 - 7:30 PM
Sept. 16 - Dec. 15, 2010 / Carolyn Hewes Toft Gallery at Architecture St. Louis / 911 Washington Avenue, Suite 170 / Opening Reception 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 16
Selected from the extensive private collection of Kyrle Boldt, III, this exhibit of exquisite and rare architectural renderings and hand-drawn perspectives showcases the amazing talents of some of St. Louis' most accomplished architects and draftsmen. Beginning with a rendering of the Tuholske Surgical Institute (ca. 1890) by architect John Ludwig Wees (1861-1942) the exhibit spans most of the 20th century and contains examples of residential, commercial and industrial designs from the offices of such masters as Hefenstellar, Hirsch and Watson, Charles Eames, James Murphy, William Adair Bernoudy, Isadore Shank, Frederick Dunn and others. Created before the days of computer technology and AutoCad programs, these beautifully executed renderings illustrate the artistic capabilities that are still an essential component of the architectural profession

Even if you can't afford to buy a Bernoudy home, now you can still have a little bit of Bernoudy in one of the planters that he designed. This rare planter measures 12"x12"x 9" and is available for $4,500 from a collector in San Francisco. It featured the original copper liner. If you are interested, check out this LINK.

I was a gorgeous day yesterday for the Bernoudy House Tour to benefit Frank Lloyd Wright's Ebsworth Park house in Kirkwood. There were five houses on tour and then everyone assembled at a gorgeous Bernoudy home located on Upper Barnes Rd in Ladue.
My mother's house, which Bernoudy lived in himself with his wife, was on the tour. I spent every morning over Memorial Day weekend power washing her brick patios, walls and house. The task was daunting since she has brick patios on four sides of the house. A friend told me a helpful hint to get rid of moss and algae off of brick patios....spray them with chlorine. I have to try this next time. Below are a few pics of my mother's house.

Oh well at least we are home and don't have to drive today.
Fallingwater was an experience and I want it! Seeing this Frank Lloyd Wright home inspires you to further appreciate the architect and his focus on integrating a house with its surroundings.I wish I could show you some interior pics, though the museum does not let you take them. You can see how our local William Bernoudy used many of the same ideas as Wright in his homes. The use of built-in bookshelves, seating, lighting, etc. He also was great at bringing the outside in with his use of windows, terraces and balconies.

This fine mid-century home in Ladue was designed by William Bernoudy, though completed by someone else. It is located next to another fine Bernoudy on a quiet cul-de-sac. In fact, when I first saw that house was on the market, I thought it was the Bernoudy next door that was back on the market. Remember that house sold very quickly this Spring....so hurry up if you are interested in this one!
It is offered at a reasonable $699,900 and is almost 2900 sq ft with 3 bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths.
Offered by Karen Seigel @ Laura McCarthy Real Estate 314-725-5100 Open this Sunday.

This stunning Bernoudy home located on Barnes Road in Ladue is on the market for $1,549,000. I have been through it a few months ago and thought it was wonderful. The rooms feel more open with taller ceilings than many of the earlier Bernoudys. This house is large with almost 7,000 of space. The back of the 2 acre lot adjoins Emily Pulitzer's wooded estate. All this and an indoor pool!

For $925,000 you get over 5,000 sq ft of living space on over an acre. In addition, the basement is enormous with tall ceilings. Supposedly the owner had it built as a fall out shelter for a local school.
