Winkle Terra Cotta Exhibit at the 1904 World’s Fair

Check out this picture from the Missouri History Museum that shows the Winkle Terra Cotta Exhibit at the 1904 World’s Fair. The main thing is the large fireplace surround, apparently with a mirrored overmantel. It looks like carved oak to me but is apparently all terra cotta. Has anyone ever seen something like this in a St. Louis home?

Yesterday I had the treat of seeing two Olivette Mid-century (MCM) ranches that were pretty much in their original state.

4 Twin Oaks, Ladue- Vintage Pictures

Today I a featuring some vintage photos of the home located at 4 Twin Oaks that I sold off market last week.  Designed in 1954 by Eugene Mackey, Sr. and Joseph Murphy for the founder of Fleishman Hillard, Alfred Fleishman.  I am betting that these photos were taken when Al Fleishman owned the home.

SOLD - 15 Washington Terrace, CWE

This gorgeous Central West End home as finally sold! I represented the Buyer. There is a story here. About 4 years ago I helped list this home. Thinking about marketing ideas on how to get it sold, I spoke to Alan Brainerd, who was writing for the Ladue News. We decided that Ladue News should start doing an annual Decorator's Show House....and 15 Washington Terrace was the first one! It was quite a challenge getting the house into shape for the designers to start redoing their rooms. The Living Room ceiling also collapsed during the process.

Well after the Show House ended, we actually got a contract from someone who wanted to lease it with a real purchase within 1 year. Well that 1 year drifted into another year and then another. In the meantime the family who were occupying the mansion decided to start to renovate it. This was not to the owners knowledge or approval....except I did think we agree to let them redo a shower. 

It came to our realization that the renters would never be able to buy the property.  We toured the home and found out that all of the electric and plumbing were replaced and all the baths were gutted. The radiators were missing and the home was left without heat.  In addition, most of the architectural molding were removed. It is sad to think that the tenants could have bought the house if they just used their money for a downpayment rather than starting a renovation. Tenants were removed and the house went back on the market as a Fixer-Upper.

Now it has sold a a capable couple who will make this home a true Showplace!

My Garden

If you have read my blog for a while, I used to feature more pictures of my garden. Well I moved three years ago and have been working on the garden at my new home. I am excited that my cutting garden will begin blooming this week!  Unless I get a raid from my deer friends...it should be good. They always say it takes 3 years for perennials to start to look good.  Here are a few pictures of what is going on now....my planters are certainly happy!
