4 Daniel Road- the house that replaced the Bernoudy-designed Schweiss Home

The Bernoudy-designed Schweiss home located at 4 Daniel Rd in Ladue was torn down last fall.  The new house built on the property is now finished and being lived in. 

I was sad to see the Schweiss home gone forever. It was a difficult house to save being in poor condition, priced at $400,000 and only about 1000 sq. feet. I had a buyer, though it did not appraise for much more than $300,000.  Lots in Ladue are going for $500,000- $600,000. Economics prevail.  It really needed a savior not concerned with buying it and it making financial sense.

Ladue News featured an article about Mid-Century style in their latest edition. If you flip to page 23 you will notice a 2 page article that shows my home as well as 2 Deer Creek Hill in Ladue that is coming on the market later this month. It focuses on the iconic style that St Louis has inhabited since the design of the Gateway arch in the 1960's. The article points out that design style has become a staple in the St. Louis area since then. The article quotes me at one point saying, "One thing happened in the 50's: The technology improved and you could have big, floor-to-ceiling picture windows. You could do more interesting things with architecture, like horizontal beams and cantilevered overhangs." My home was designed by the illustrious William Bernoudy and the home was actually occupied by Bernoudy himself.

Bernoudy-Mutrux in Columbia, MO

Over the weekend I visited my son at Mizzou for his fratnity's Father's Weekend. I survived better this year than last year since I have learned that shots are not for me at this age. We had a little time to visit the enclaves near Cliff Drive to see some Bernoudy-Mutrux- designed homes.  I loved the setting perched high cliff above Hinkson Creek.

From William Adair Bernoudy, Architect by Osmund Overby:

"In 1950, Bernoudy began a series of projects in Columbia, Missouri, they came to him through a friendship with Thomas Putnam, an interior designer and at the time the chairman of the Interior Design Department at Stephens College. A new area on the east side of Columbia was being developed on a high cliff overlooking Hinkson Creek. Several members of the Stephens staff were among the original buyers of lots in the development, and through Putnam they engaged Bernoudy-Mutrux."

The Schweiss Home- 4 Daniel Rd, Ladue, Designed by Bernoudy...Coming Down :(

Well we knew it was going to happen, though sometime you can just try to ignore reality...though the wonderful Bernoudy/Mutrux- designed Schweiss Home is coming down.  See more pictures of the home HERE.

You may ask....how can this happen? It is the reality of finances. The home is only about 1,000 sq ft and the current owners wanted $400,000 for it....and it eventually sold for $375,000. That is $375 a square foot in Ladue which is very high.  The home was is poor condition. 4 Daniel Rd. was never really listed in the open market. I had it under contract once, though the Buyer could not get it to appraise for anywhere near the purchase price....even with the lot value. Appraisers and banks can't get around price per sq foot. The other challenge was finding other 1,000 sq ft, 1 bedroom homes in Ladue for comps.

We needed someone to buy it who could pay cash and did not care about making it a financial decision....a charitable, architecture enthusiast!  They are out there!

Last year I had the opportunity to tour this lovely Bernoudy home in Ladue. The other day a friend gave me a copy of Saint Louis- Portrait of a River City by Elinor Martineau Coyle. It was published in 1966.  My Bernoudy house was featured in it.

Before and After: The Back Patio is Done!

My back patio is finally done!  I added some teak love seats and a coffee table from Restoration Hardware's Leagrave Collection. They are on sale now.....you can also find some at the Chesterfield Outlet store, though not all of the pieces.  The original Bernoudy wall cabinets were restored. I am ready for some Fall entertaining.

Bernoudy-designed Masterpiece, 9052 Clayton Rd SOLD/CLOSED

Today I represented the Buyers of this fantastic Bernoudy home. This home was built in 1960 for the Kings. In some ways I like this house even better than mine. It is bright, has a large kitchen and a refreshing pool!  A nice bonus on a 100 degree day.

I recently had my two exterior wall cabinets removed and shipped to Custom Furniture Works to have them refinished. The veneer was warping and they were getting tired. The renovated version is supposed to be close to the original colors....they are brighter! I think I like them now, though it just takes getting used to them.

McCobb Side Table

Amy Burger from the St. Louis Post Dispatch is coming Tuesday to have my house photographed and write a little article....will I ever be ready?  My Paul McCobb side table arrived today with a travertine top.

Bernoudy on Conway Rd, Town and Country, SOLD/CLOSED

The lovely Bernoudy home on 18 acres in Town and County that I had listed closed today. The Buyers intend to keep the house and 18 acres. This home was the 2012 Ladue News Decorator's Show House. You can see interior pictures HERE. This is the most expensive home sold in the area so far in 2013.

The Evolution of My Living Room

I still have some things to finish in my Living Room, though it is coming together.  I have ordered an Asian-motif rug from Stark and an going to have two side chairs redone...oh and I almost forgot....my designer, David Deatherage of Century Design tracked down a wonderful Paul McCobb cocktail table in Pittsburgh that is making its way to St. Louis for me.

The pictures below show the evolution of this room.  

This is an early picture of this room when William Bernoudy was a bachelor and his mother was living with him.

This is the picture from the Bernoudy book and was taken after Bill Bernoudy had passed away and his wife, Gertrude, commissioned the book to be written.

And here is present day with my influence.

Bernoudy-designed Glass Cabinet

One of my favorite features of my Bernoudy home is the glass cabinet in the kitchen. It is lite from underneath. Sometimes I feel like the crystal department at Famous-Barr, though it is cool.  I made sure only clear glasses are featured.

Ruth Schweiss

The other day I took these photos of a sculpture by Ruth Schweiss that sits outside of a Bernoudy-designed home. This work of reminds me of the Carl Milles sculptures in the Meeting of the Waters near Union Station.

Modern STL Holiday Party @ My Home Yesterday

Old Sweet Gum Tree

Sweet Gum trees are one of the least favorite trees that people have in their yards. They were popular in the 50's so you see them often in the yards of ranch homes. The "gum balls" are a real annoyance. I have one in my yard that I really love.  The branches are low and stretch out. They are also covered with moss and turn bright green after a rain. Here is my tree on this foggy morning.

Ladue News Decorator's Show House 2012 Before and After Pictures- The Foyer

Arlene Lilie was assigned to decorate one the more dramatic spaces in this Bernoudy home. Her room looked out to an enclosed courtyard featuring a stunning Ernest T. Trova sculpture. The Trova Project, part of Ivey Selkirk, generously loaned close to 100 pieces from their gallery to help the decorators transform their spaces. It was fun to see the different phases of Ernie Trova's work throughout the house.
